The man behind the company
Meet Mike
Van der Kooij Schilderwerken & Totaalonderhoud is the company of Mike van der Kooij from Vleuten. Mike learned the trade from the ground up and spent years working for larger painting companies, until he wanted to do things differently: more personal, with more eye for detail. Since then, his own name has been on the van.
No call centre and no changing crews — you have one point of contact: Mike himself, who is still up on the scaffolding with the rest of them. He knows the characteristic 1930s houses of Vleuten, the new-builds in Leidsche Rijn and the villas in ’t Gooi, and knows which paint system stands up to the weather in each.

What does a painter cost?
That depends on the condition of the woodwork, the size of the job, access (does it need scaffolding or a cherry picker?) and the paint system. Every job is different, so we only quote a price once we know what is involved. Send 3–5 photos via the WhatsApp check and you will receive a first price indication or an appointment for an exact quote within 2 working days, with no obligation either way.
Which areas do you work in?
Our home base is Vleuten. From there we are quickly in all of Utrecht, Leidsche Rijn, De Meern, Haarzuilens and Vianen. We also work regularly in ’t Gooi. Is your home outside these areas? Feel free to get in touch — we can usually work something out.
When is the best time for exterior painting?
We schedule exterior painting roughly from March to October, in dry weather and temperatures above 10 °C. Interior painting is possible all year round. Winter is quieter, which makes it good value, and there is an early-planning discount if you book ahead.
Can you repair wood rot in window frames and facades?
Yes, that is one of our specialities. We cut out the affected wood, repair it properly and only then paint. That way we deal with the cause, so the rot does not come back in a few years.
Do you also come for smaller jobs?
Yes. A single front door, a few window frames or one ceiling is no problem — especially in and around Vleuten there is no long drive involved. Send a photo via the WhatsApp check and you will quickly hear what it costs.
Does Van der Kooij also take on larger projects and new-builds?
Certainly. From a single front door to a complete facade renovation or a new-build development of dozens of homes: Van der Kooij Schilderwerken covers the whole spectrum. For larger work we scale up with a regular, experienced crew, so the planning and the quality stay the same. You get exactly the right crew for your job.
I am a contractor. Can I hire Van der Kooij as a subcontractor?
Yes. Van der Kooij Schilderwerken regularly works with contractors, construction companies and developers as their regular painting partner on new-builds, renovation and maintenance. Clear agreements, active input on the planning and work that is right first time at handover. Tell us what you need and we will discuss how we can fit in.
Which paints and paint systems do you use?
We work exclusively with premium paint systems, including Jotun. For wooden facades and cladding we use, for example, Jotun Demidekk: a Scandinavian system that penetrates the wood, lets it breathe and withstands the weather for years. Which system fits best depends on the substrate and how exposed your property is; we settle that during the survey.
My home is still fairly new — is painting already needed?
Factory-sprayed window frames and doors on new-builds have a thinner finish than traditional paintwork and weather fastest on south- and west-facing sides. A first round of maintenance after 5 to 8 years keeps the woodwork in good condition and heads off wood rot.
Do you also renew the sealant?
Yes. Dried-out or loose sealant joints are replaced during the paint job, so window frames and facade are wind- and watertight again. Sealant is often where moisture gets in, so we always check it.
Will I have the same people at my home throughout?
You work with one point of contact and the same crew, from the first quote to the handover. No call centre and no changing faces, so you always know who is working in and around your home.
